Demokratiska republiken Kongo är, tillsammans med Afghanistan, Jemen och Syrien, hem åt en av de största nödsituationer WFP arbetar i - efter decennier av konflikter och klimatförändringar som fortsätter att minska människors tillgång till de mest grundläggande livsmedlen och öka hungern till aldrig tidigare skådade nivåer.

Att utrota hungern i världen är en av vår tids största utmaningar. År 2024 står så många som 309 miljoner människor i världen inför akuta nivåer av livsmedelsotrygghet i de 72 länder där WFP arbetar och där data finns tillgänglig.
Var och en av de 690 miljoner hungriga människor i världen idag har rätt att leva fredligt och utan hunger. Idag har den norska Nobelkommittén riktat globala strålkastare mot dem och de förödande konsekvenserna av konflikt. Klimatförändringar och ekonomiska påfrestningar har ytterligare förvärrat deras situation.
”Konflikten i Jemen har orsakat en humanitär katastrof som lett till stort lidande och hunger på nivåer utan motstycke” säger Muhannad Hadi, WFP:s regionala chef för Mellanöstern, Nordafrika, Centralasien och Östeuropa. ”Landet har lamslagits av hunger, sjukdomar och fattigdom.
Det här är världens värsta kolerautbrott, mitt i världens största humanitära katastrof. Bara under de senaste tre månaderna har 400,000 fall av misstänkt kolera, samt 1900 relaterade dödsfall dokumenterats.
