En av de mer avgörande slutsatserna av rapporten berör den enorma summa pengar som går till livsmedelsassistans som skulle kunnat undvikits genom förebyggande åtgärder.
Den gemensamma WFP-IOM rapporten betonar det nära sambandet mellan hunger, konflikt, migration och fördrivning - vilket har förvärrats ytterligare av COVID-19. Studien utforskar effekten av pandemin på levebröd, tryggad livsmedelsförsörjning, samt skydd av migrantarbetares hushåll som är beroende av remitteringar och de som tvångsförflyttats.
WFP:s karta över hunger i världen för 2020 skildrar förekomsten av undernäring hos befolkningen i varje land under 2017-2019. Om nuvarande trender fortsätter kommer antalet hungriga människor att nå 840 miljoner till år 2030.
Platserna som besöks innefattar bland annat den avgörande hamnstaden Hodeidah, som nyligen drabbats av våldsamma strider, och Saa´da i de nordvästra delarna där knappt några bilder kommit ut under de senaste åren.
”Dagens omröstning i säkerhetsrådet är ett enormt steg framåt i kampen för att bryta den cirkel av konflikt och hunger som står i vägen för välstånd och fred för hundratals miljoner människor,” säger David Beasley. ”Säkerhetsrådet erkänner att en tryggad livsmedelsförsörjning är en väsentlig faktor för fred och säkerhet.
