Rom/Köpenhamn – Nya bevis stärker varningssignalerna om att antalet människor som lider av hunger i världen fortsätter att öka. 2017 steg siffran till 821 miljoner människor, det motsvarar en av nio, enligt rapporten The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018 som släpps idag.
McCain, som har tjänstgjort sedan 2021 som USA:s ambassadör till FN:s tre livsmedels- och jordbruksorgan i Rom, övertar ledningen för en organisation som förra året försedde rekordhöga antalet 158 miljoner människor runt om i världen med livsmedelsassistans.
Samtidigt som rekordmånga människor flyr sina hem från krig och konflikter, växer oron för att den framgång som skett med att avskaffa global hunger nu vänder.’’Någon gång i framtiden kommer Världslivsmedelsdagen vara ett firande för en fredlig värld där det inte finns någon hunger. Sorgligt nog verkar den dagen vara långt borta just nu.
Utöver utställningen innehåller dagen två större event, ett panelsamtal och ett mingel. Representanter från de olika organisationerna finns tillgängliga för intervjuer under dagen. Utställningen öppnas med ett panelsamtal om hunger och konflikt, .
Konflikter, ekonomiska chocker, extremt klimat och skyhöga priser på gödningsmedel skapar tillsammans en livsmedelskris av aldrig tidigare skådade proportioner. Så många som 783 miljoner människor står inför kronisk hunger.
