I Port Sudan, där tiotusentals människor söker skydd på flykt undan konflikt, har farligt höga nivåer av undernäring uppmätts hos spädbarn. Hungriga människor fyller skolor och andra provisoriska bostäder och klamrar sig fast vid knappa ägodelar från sina gamla liv.
Gör livsmedel ett verktyg för fred istället, uppmanar WFP:s verkställande direktör.Av: Simona Beltrami.För att markera den internationella fredsdagen är World Food Programmes (WFP) verkställande direktör David Beasley tydlig: "Det finns inte två vägar att gå — vi kan inte få ett slut på hunger utan att också få ett slut på konflikter".Världen står på gränsen till en hungerpandemi.
”Dagens omröstning i säkerhetsrådet är ett enormt steg framåt i kampen för att bryta den cirkel av konflikt och hunger som står i vägen för välstånd och fred för hundratals miljoner människor,” säger David Beasley. ”Säkerhetsrådet erkänner att en tryggad livsmedelsförsörjning är en väsentlig faktor för fred och säkerhet.
Utöver utställningen innehåller dagen två större event, ett panelsamtal och ett mingel. Representanter från de olika organisationerna finns tillgängliga för intervjuer under dagen. Utställningen öppnas med ett panelsamtal om hunger och konflikt, .
På slätterna i Adadle-distriktet i Etiopiens Somali-region brukade gräset växa sig så högt att lejon kunde gömma sig i det, säger folk. Så är det inte längre.
Under de senaste fyra månaderna har samhällen lämnats öde då mer än 80 hushåll lämnat sina hem på jakt efter vatten.
