Smala gränder ringlar sig nedför backen och in mellan de tätt packade plåtskjulen. Den här labyrinten av trånga gator rymmer de hundratals hem som utgör Moroto Simitini.
Byn ligger i Kenyas kuststad Mombasa, där World Food Programme (WFP) förser familjer som har förlorat sin inkomst på grund av COVID-19 med nödhjälp i form av kontantöverföringar.
Tillgängligheten av flexibelt kärnstöd hjälpte WFP att i ett tidigt skede starta insatserna i Sahelregionen efter den värsta torkan på fyra år. WFP nådde där över tre miljoner människor med livsmedelsassistans och kunde avvärja en storskalig livsmedelskris.
Det här är världens värsta kolerautbrott, mitt i världens största humanitära katastrof. Bara under de senaste tre månaderna har 400,000 fall av misstänkt kolera, samt 1900 relaterade dödsfall dokumenterats.
Tack vare länder som Sverige, kunde WFP nyligen allokera 180 miljoner amerikanska dollar till cirka 60 landsinsatser. Allokeringen kommer stödja de livräddande insatserna i Syrien, Jemen, Centralafrikanska republiken och Demokratiska republiken Kongo.
Antalet människor som nu står inför en akut otryggad livsmedelsförsörjning (IPC/CH 3 eller värre) kommer att stiga till 265 miljoner under 2020. Det innebär en ökning med 130 miljoner från de 135 miljoner under 2019, till följd av de ekonomiska konsekvenserna av COVID-19, enligt en WFP-projektion.
Som ett exempel, FN:s livsmedelsprogram (WFP), världens största internationella livsmedelsorganisation, har sett kostnadsökningar med över 140 procent under en sju-årsperiod, från SEK 18,2 miljarder 2009 till SEK 44 miljarder under 2015.
